211 Information and Referral Service Provides Resources and Support for People in Need

Daytona Beach, FL

When Halifax Health conducted its most recent Community Health Needs Assessment, lack of access to care was identified as a high priority.  While the local region has dedicated health care resources, a fact well documented by regional Department of Health Inventory Assessments, many individuals in need did not know where to go or how to find them.

In response, Halifax Health partnered with the Florida Department of Health in Volusia County, the United Way, the Daytona Regional Chamber of Commerce and Florida Hospital to upgrade and expand the existing local United Way 211 Call Center and website to include health and wellness resource listings in its public database of social and human service providers.  Halifax Health played an integral role in bringing together the Volusia County Department of Health with an initiative of the Daytona Regional Chamber’s “Leadership Daytona” class project on health care.  This included providing technical leadership on the steering committee to identify a workable web-based strategy that leveraged the existing United Way infrastructure, and contributing to the development of a sustainable project team and budget.

The 2-1-1 referral service catalogues community resources for public access through the telephone service (2-1-1) and website (www.211live.org).  Services are listed by topic, including how to access resources related to food, shelter and housing, financial assistance, substance abuse, mental health, health and wellness, legal services, criminal justice, employment, education, transportation, and disaster services and hotlines.  The referral service was created to give people in need of community services direction, support and a place to call when they don’t know where to turn. The service is free, and confidential. Certified Information & Referral Specialists are available by telephone 24/7, 365 days a year, locally from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday thru Friday, with afterhours coverage by 2-1-1 Brevard.
